Engineered For…

Well people it’s been 5 months since I BEcame a B.E – an engineer. And 5 months after getting the “prestigious” tag I have began wondering…

Whats it with being an engineer that people think you are living a life that just doesn’t help others and well holds no good for anyone but us. All my friends into fields other than those requiring spending countless hours in front of the computer think that engineers get paid for nothing (which is partly true I will agree but its true more often than not in their case too).

But that’s not my complain. My complain is with the people who came up with titles for professionals. Why do doctors have a Dr., law practitioners barrister before their name and why don’t engineers get to put a Er. with their name. I would have liked having a prefix like that to my name that was recognized by the world and not only by me. It’s kinda irritating when someone tries to put that in front of their name (refer orkut for such nut jobs). What are people trying to prove even though the world does not recognize it lets do something and make a fool out of ourselves.

But may be I am just being too cynical. May be I am looking at things the wrong way. Being an engineer does have its pros. We are the selective few who are considered to be marriageable by the time we are 22-23. We are the ones who are most consulted for future career operations. And what else we have now caught the eyes of the terrorists as well. The foiled attack on infosys mysore being a proof of that.

So, I guess we do get our due share of attention just that it’s always for all the wrong reasons.
